Stormy Seas Batter the Jetty

The mouth of the Merrimack River serves as the entrance into Newburyport Harbor. The mouth of the river is notorious for shifting sand bars and treacherous conditions during storms. The north and south jetties are part of a long running battle to keep the river's entrance navigable. On Tuesday April 28, an offshore storm system kicked up some rough seas as shown in this series of photos. (You can enlarge the photos by clicking on them.)

A rough surf almost completely covers the jetty.

On this day a Coast Guard boat was on training maneuvers in the mouth of the river
